Abstract

This study deals with interpersonal functions in political articles of the Newsweek. The objectives are to find out the types of speech functions are used in political articles of the Newsweek, to describe the speech functions interrelated in the system of network, to mention some reasons of using in speech functions in system of network, and to show the most dominant Speech Functions and Mood used. The design of the study is proposed descriptively. The data was collected from ten political articles of the Newsweek issued from January, February and March 2007. The research findings indicate that there are 43 types of speech functions used in political articles in the Newsweek. It means that they have relationship to the system of network through roles and commodity, where they are also used to fulfil human needs in exchange experience which is oriented to functional interpretation or systemic functional. And the most dominant speech functions and Mood used is Statement and Declarative.
