Abstract

This study aims at improving students’ listening skills using storytelling
technique. In this study the writer conducted classroom action research. The
population of this research was the 2009-2010 second year students of Junior
High School Husni Thamrin, Medan. There were two parallel classes that
consisted of 50 students each class. The sample was one class which consisted of
50 students chosen, represented all the population. There were two kinds of data
collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for
collecting the quantitative data was listening test while the qualitative data were
gathered through the interview, diary notes and observation sheet. The
quantitative data showed that the students were interested in the storytelling
technique. It was proved by the data, which showed the progressive mean of the
students. The mean in the second cycle was 96.4, higher than the first cycle, 74,6
and the pre-test was only 47,2. The data from the diary note, observation sheet
and interview indicated that students got improvement. It indicated that the
application of the storytelling technique improve students’ listening skills.
