Abstract

This study deals with logical meanings in Indonesian newspaper story texts (INSTs). Three
problems are addressed in this study, namely the inquiry on types of logical meaning in
INSTs, investigation on the dominant type of logical meaning and explanation on the
occurrence of the dominant type. The data were obtained from twenty four texts of four
Indonesian newspapers, namely daily Kompas (K), Republika (R), Waspada (W) and Sinar
Indonesia Baru. The texts were analyzed by applying sy~temic functional linguistics (SfL)
theories. The occurrences of logical meaning were quantitatively analyzed by converting
them into percentages to detennine the proportions. The findings indicate that there are ten
types of logical meaning are tound in JNSTs, namely ( 1) paratactic elaboration, (2) pararactic
extension, (3) paratactic enhancement, (4) paratactic locution, {5) hypotatic elaboration, (6-l
hypotactic extension, (7) hypotactic enhancement, (8) hypotactic locutionl'9} hypotactic idea
and ( 1 0) pseudo projection. Of the ten categories of the logical meaning, hypo tactic locution
dominantly occurs in INSTs with the proportion of almost one third (29. 75%) of the total
occurring of logical meanings. The reason for the dominant occurrence of hypotactic
ocut10n ts t e JOum tst or reporter functions to project reality (social and natural) to the
readers. This is sought in the social context of INSTs, specifically in the Situation where the
journalist firstly represents reality in linguistic experience, which is eventually projected or
recoded in another linguistic representation.
