Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the effect of applying metacognitive strategies on students’ reading comprehension. This study used experimental design wit the two group design. The population of this study was the second year students of Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas : SMA Negeri 3 Medan). There were 84 students from the population of Grade XI (400 students) taken as the sample of this research. The sample was devided into two groups: the first group (43 students) as the experimental group and the second group (41) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by applying the metacognitive strategies, while the control group was taught without applying metacognitive strategies (conventionally). The instrument of collecting data was 30 items of multiple choise tests. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer used Kudgher Richardson (KR 21) formula; the computation shows that the reliability of the test was 0.47. The were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of students in the experimental group was significantly higher than the scores of students in the control group. At the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 82, t-observed is 4.43 while the t-table is 1.67. Then, the F-values is 1.01 and F- table is 1.6085 with the degree of freedom (df) V2= 43; V1= 42 at the level significance 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted.
